How Can I Prepare to Foster a Boxer?

  1. Get all current pets up-to-date on their vaccines, as shelter dogs are often more susceptible to illness.
  2. Pet-proof your home! Pick up any small, sharp, or otherwise dangerous objects from the floor. Store food, medications, trash cans, and cleaners/other chemicals safely away from a curious boxer. Put valuable items in a safe place so they won't be knocked over. Take care to put house plants (which could be poisonous for pets) and dangling cords somewhere he won't be able to chew on them. Close the toilet lids. If you have fish or other small pets, make sure they're also securely out of his reach.
  3. Your foster dog may be anxious when you first take him home. Pick an indoor space for him to stay in while he adjusts to his new surroundings. The area should be big enough for a crate, water and food bowls, and toys.
